Born from the left eye of Izanagi during his cleansing in the Styx, Amaterasu is the Sun Goddess of Japan, the leader of the Amatsukami and, with Niamh, the only female pantheon leader.
As the central figure of the Amatsukami, Amaterasu is the sister of Susano-o, the God of Storms and the Sea, and of Tsuki-yomi, the God of the Moon.

However, unlike Zeus, she does no get along easily with her siblings. She became the ruler of the Sun and the Heavens along with her brother and husband, Tsuki-Yomi, the God of the Moon and ruler of the Night. Originally, Amaterasu shared the sky with him until he killed the Goddess of Food, Uke Mochi, when she pulled "food from her rectum, nose, and mouth". This murder upset Amaterasu causing her to label Tsuki-yomi an evil God and split away from him; separating night from day.

She also has tumultuous relationship with her other brother, Susano-o. Her restless brother once went on a drunken rampage, shaming her so much that she decided to hide inside the Ama-no-Iwato ("heavenly rock cave"), thus effectively hiding the sun for a long period of time. The clever Ame no Uzume brought her mirror (Yata no Kagami) at the entry of the cave, thus showing her that her brothers dishonorable behaviour had no effect on her regal beauty. Susano-o was punished by being banished from the Godrealm. Both siblings later amended their conflict when Susano-o gave her the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword as a reconciliation gift.

Amaterasu is fond of Japan and always has been. She is deeply fond of its people and its land and has always tried her best to protect it, watching over the japanese royal family throughout history and has sired many Godborns to make Japan a great nation. She is firmly convinced that traditions and honors are the only values worth dying for. On a political level, despite her relatively low raw power for a pantheon leader (Athena could probably take her), she is calm, wise and a talented diplomat, who uses not her beauty vulgarly but as a mean to reflect the beauty of others. Being invited to a tea party in her palace is a challenge, the rites being extremely complicated. However, it allows true peace of mind and a space for calm deliberation, something Gods sometimes (often) lack.

In the upcoming War, Amaterasu has gathered her pantheon around her. She is not a warrior at heart and she wishes her father would come out of his spleen. However, she has made many alliances, especially with mythborns, and prepared her forces. Sending her potent diplomats Hachiman and Tsuki-yomi and constantly inviting beings (she recently had a really nice chat with Titania and Ao Guang over the best way to make tea), she has made many alliances with "small fries" and is hoping to save her pantheon from the wrath of its darkest enemy Mikaboshi.

When she does find time to meddle in human affairs, Amaterasu can be an artist or a teacher, revealing the best and the beauty in other people through kindness and willpower. As a psychologist, she has helped people find their own inner strength. She also has been the splendid wife of a mafia boss, who holds grudges and teaches etiquette. Her Godborns are always japanese-born, always working for the betterment of their homeland in one way or another, with a radiant face and a proud smile. They curse those who dishonor them without hope of forgiveness, they bolster those who help them with selflessness.
