Hine-nui-te-pō is the Maori Goddess of Night and Death and the second and current ruler of the Maori Underworld, Rarohenga. As such, she has quite an important role in the Nga Tama a Rangi and is its most prominent female figure. She is a daughter of Tane Mahuta. She fled to the underworld because she discovered that Tāne, whom she had married, was also her father. It is her embarrassment which colors the sky red at sunset. As the moon, she lights the path of souls to the underworld as her reflection creates a path of light on the surface of the sea. Therefore dying on a new moon was a bad omen as the ghost would never find the way to Hine-nui-te-po.

Hine-nui-te-po is a pale woman of undeniable beauty. She is one of the most caring and admirable Death God, who values honor, family and principles above all else. She killed her cousin Maui without a second of hesitation when he tried to give immortality to humanity. She took charge of the Underworld when the God Whiro, brother of Tane, became the Titan Avatar of Death known as Camazotz. Powerful, she uses the light of the moon to guide her allies and the darkness of the night to crush her enemies. She takes great care of the souls of the Maori and Rarohenga is a beautiful underground island, where life is not easy but never unfair. She is a great diplomat and often invites other Gods for simple but delicious meals in her realm with her new husband Ruaumoko.

Hine-nui-te-po takes human form during the new moon, when she is less needed. She does not stay long as she has secluded herself from the lands of the living. As a dark dancer in a crowded club, a mysterious street vigilante or a life coach, Hine-nui-te-po always acts precisely and with purpose in order to change the world for the better. Her Godborns are quite rare as the goddess does not enjoy cheating on her husband. However, like their mother, they are often dark but dedicated people who are respected for their tenacity in respecting their ideals, principles and values of equality and fairness.
