Mictlantecuhtli is the night God of the Dead, son of Tezcatlipoca and the Lord of Mictlan (Chicunauhmictlan), the lowest level of the Teotl Underworld.
Though the Aztecs have had many lesser death Gods over the years, all recognize the supremacy of Miclántecuhtli. As a six-feet tall blood splattered skeleton, the Aztec Lord of the Dead is a frightful sight to behold. His eyes still remain in his barren skull, he wears a necklace of human eyes and a crown of bones and owl feathers.

In Mictlan, Miclántecuhtli found Primarch bones buried deep in the ground, holding tremendous powers. He decided to leave them in the ground, fearing their power would be too great for the World to handle. After the Second Titanomachy, Quetzalcoatl saw an opportunity to heal the World who had suffered a great deal and tried to steal the bones along with Xolotl. However, Miclántecuhtli confronted them and the ensuing fight shattered the bones, weakening their humongous power. Bringing back the brokened bones to the other Cardinal Gods and explaining his plan, the Teotl used the bones to create the Tlamacazqui.

Though fearsome, Miclántecuhtli is not a bad guy at heart. Associated with spiders, bats and owls, the God of Death is a keen administrator, much like Hades. He sorts all Aztec souls between normal death (old age, disease), shameful death (suicide, fleeing) and heroic death (fighting or being sacrificed). He is associated with Night as heroic souls become shining spots in the sky of the Aztec Godrealm. He simply consumes the souls of the shameful without any remorse, only allowing "normal" souls get to rest in his realm (after they pass terrible trials though). Despite his rough ways and appearance, the God maintains good diplomatic relationships with other Death Deities, such as Hades, Yama and even Izanami. He knows they are his best allies against Camazotz

Miclántecuhtli is cautious, methodical with an eye on the long term. He visits the world as an accountant, a life-insurance specialist or a brooding incorruptible judge. His Godborns have sharp, rational minds, and prefer autonomy and self-sufficiency over reliance on someone or something. Dependency on others is often seen by them as a weakness, and their passion for duty, dependability and impeccable personal integrity forbid falling into such a trap…
